  27. VIRSCAN.DAT   This is the main data file used by Norton AntiVirus. This
  28.               file replaces the existing VIRSCAN.DAT in your Norton
  29.               AntiVirus directory.

  31. VIRSCAN.INF   This data file is used by Norton AntiVirus to display
  32.               virus information, such as virus characteristics and
  33.               behavior. This file is not required to detect or repair
  34.               viruses.
  35.  
  36. VIRSPEC.TXT   Special instructions concerning specific viruses.

  103. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions:

  108. *  If your version of Norton AntiVirus 3.0 for Windows and DOS is dated  *
  109. *  before December 1, 1995, you will need to update it using the NAV     *
  110. *  Macro Engine Update in order to protect against Word Macro Viruses.   *
  111. *  If you have not updated your version, download the NAV Macro Engine   *
  112. *  Update from the Symantec BBS, Symantec's FTP and Web site,            *
  113. *  CompuServe, America Online, or Microsoft Network. The file is called  *
  114. *  UPDATEME.EXE and is located where the monthly update files are        *
  115. *  normally found. Alternately, you may call Customer Service at (800)   *
  116. *  441-7234 to order a disk set.                                         *

  120.    1.  Copy 03NAV96A.ZIP to the location where Norton AntiVirus has been
  121.        installed.  By default, this is the C:\NAV directory.

  123.    2.  Change to the drive and directory where you copied the file to.
  124.  
  125.    3.  Verify PKUNZIP.EXE can be found somewhere along the PATH.  For
  126.        example, if PKUNZIP.EXE is located in \PKWARE, type "SET" at a
  127.        DOS prompt should show your path to look something like the
  128.        following:

  130.            PATH=C:\NAV;C:\WINDOWS;C:\PKWARE
  131.  
  132.    4.  At the DOS prompt, type:
  133.  
  134.           PKUNZIP -O 03NAV96A.ZIP
  135.  
  136.    5.  Scan a drive, directory, or file with Norton AntiVirus 3.0, in
  137.        either DOS or Windows.  Doing this, automatically updates the
  138.        Norton Antivirus TSR.

  140.    6.  Reboot your computer to reload the updated Norton Antivirus
  141.        TSR.

  166.        Computer window opens displaying your available drives.

  168.    2.  Double-click the drive or directory that contains the Norton
  169.        AntiVirus definitions update .ZIP file.

  171.    3.  Copy 03NAV96A.ZIP file to your Norton Antivirus for Windows 95
  172.        folder.  By default, this is the C:\Program Files\Norton
  173.        Antivirus folder.
  174.  
  175.    4.  Open a DOS box and change to the drive and directory where
  176.        you copied the file to.
  177.  
  178.    5.  Verify PKUNZIP.EXE can be found somewhere along the PATH.  For
  179.        example, if PKUNZIP.EXE is located in \PKWARE, type "SET" at a
  180.        DOS prompt should show your path to look something like the
  181.        following:

  183.            PATH=C:\NAV;C:\WINDOWS;C:\PKWARE
  184.  
  185.    6.  At the DOS prompt, type:
  186.  
  187.           PKUNZIP -O 03NAV96A.ZIP
  188.  
  189.    7.  Exit the DOS box

  191.    8.  Start NAV
  192.  
  193.    9.  Scan a drive, directory, or file with Norton AntiVirus.
  194.        Doing this, automatically updates the Auto Protect portion of
  195.        Norton Antivirus.

  197.    8.  Restart your computer so that the Auto Protect uses the
  198.        newest virus definitions.

  200.    NOTE: WinZIP users may start the program from within Windows 95, if
  201.    preferred.

  216. *   the NLM with these virus definitions may cause false alarms with     *

  218. *   please call Customer Service at (800) 441-7234.                      *

  231.    4.  Change to the mapped drive.

  257. To update Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions:

  259.  NOTE: The Norton AntiVirus Network Manager maintains a network copy
  260.        of Norton AntiVirus to support distribution. Make sure you have
  261.        access rights that allow read and write operations to the
  262.        NAV directory.
  263.  
  264.    1.  Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton
  265.        AntiVirus is installed.
  266.  
  267.    2.  Copy 03NAV96A.ZIP to the location mapped in step 2.
  268.  
  269.    3.  Change to the mapped drive.
  270.  
  271.    4.  Verify PKUNZIP.EXE can be found somewhere along the PATH.  For
  272.        example, if PKUNZIP.EXE is located in \PKWARE, type "SET" at a
  273.        DOS prompt should show your path to look something like the
  274.        following:

  276.            PATH=C:\NAV;C:\WINDOWS;C:\PKWARE

  278.    5.  At the DOS prompt, type:
  279.  
  280.           PKUNZIP -O 03NAV96A.ZIP

  282.    6.  Logged in as a user with WRITE rights to the Navnet directory,
  283.        run NAV.EXE from the Navnet directory and scan a drive, directory,
  284.        or file with Norton Antivirus.  Doing this, automatically updates
  285.        the Norton Antivirus TSR.

  288.    7.  If your version of Norton Antivirus Network Manager is dated on or
  289.        before July 1, 1995, you must modify your .NNS configuration
  290.        file to install/distribute all update files (by default, this
  291.        file is _DEFAULT.NNS)
  292.  
  293.        a) First locate the [InstallFiles] section in your .NNS file.
  294.           Add the entry:
  295.               VIRSP*.DAT
  296.               NAVEX*.*
  297.           to the list.
  298.  
  299.        b) Second locate the [DefinitionUpdateFiles] section.  Add
  300.           the entry:
  301.               VIRSP*.DAT
  302.               NAVEX*.*
  303.           to the list.
  304.    
  305.     The new definition files are now in place for network distribution.

  315. To update Norton AntiVirus Scanner for NT virus definitions:

  317.    1.  Copy 03NAV96A.ZIP to your Norton AntiVirus folder.
  318.        The default location is C:\WIN32APP\NAVNT
  319.  
  320.    2.  Verify PKUNZIP.EXE can be found somewhere along the PATH.  For
  321.        example, if PKUNZIP.EXE is located in \PKWARE, typing "SET" at a
  322.        DOS prompt should show your path to look something like the
  323.        following:
  324.  
  325.            PATH=C:\NAV;C:\WINDOWS;C:\PKWARE
  326.  
  327.    3.  At the command prompt, type:
  328.  
  329.           PKUNZIP -O 03NAV96A.ZIP
  330.  
  331.    4.  After the files are extracted successfully, you may delete
  332.        the compressed file.
  333.  
  334.    5.  Initiate a scan with Norton AntiVirus to activate the
  335.        new virus definitions.
